Athletics & Fitness

Tufts offers an excellent athletics and fitness program for every student. Whether you play competitive or recreational sports, you will find that Tufts sports teams are full of spirited and talented players. If you are looking to keep up with (or start!) a fitness routine, you will certainly be motivated by the university's extensive athletic facilities.

The Tufts Athletics Department sponsors 28 sports teams that are among the most competitive in the NCAA's Division III. As members of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), Tufts athletes are known for impressive performances both athletically and academically. Team sports include field and court sports in addition to a number of nationally ranked water sports. To learn more about athletic recruitment at Tufts, please view the NESCAC Statement of Common Admissions Practices.

Complementing the Tufts varsity program, you will find a number of club sports that are open to athletes of all skill levels. Tufts hosts a very active Ultimate Frisbee team in addition to a number of other seasonal club sports, including rugby, dodgeball, fencing, equestrian and cycling.

Whether you play sports or not, these state-of-the-art athletics facilities are open for your use. Our newly constructed Gantcher Center houses an indoor track, four tennis courts, spin cycles and a small weight room. Cousens Gym features a full range of cardiovascular equipment, an Olympic weight room, stretching mats, a six-lane swimming pool, squash courts, an erg room, basketball and volleyball courts, and men's and women's locker rooms. Access to all of our facilities is free with your student ID, making it easy to maintain your fitness routine throughout your years at Tufts.

Armed and Ready

For three seasons, Tufts University quarterback Tom McManama filled the back-up role for the Jumbos with a positive attitude. He saw action in eight games during his first three seasons, but his primary contribution to the team was the effort that he gave on a daily basis despite a lack of playing time. McManama was prepared to do the same again this fall, until starter Anthony Fucillo went down with an injury in the preseason. McManama is now the starting quarterback, making the most of a chance that at times he didn't think he'd ever get. Although it involves an injury to a teammate, McManama's well-deserved opportunity is something that the Tufts University Athletics Website wants to put > In Focus.
